When I was ten I discovered eating sugary carby foods, made me feel less jumpy or sad or lonely and it made me feel safe. Food to protected me from: the lonliness of being the only kid at home, from feeling awkward and scared around other kids, when I didn’t feel good being me. I desperately wanted to escape and feel good. Food temporarily gave it to me.  As a child I was confused and left to figure things out by myself and without anyone to turn to, I turned to food. It made the unsafe safe, it comforted my trying to “fit in”, in grammar school, dating in high school, and being away from home and around new people and new surroundings in college. Food meant I didn’t feel so alone.

But one Friday afternoon while I was in my mid 20’s and searching through my parents cereal cabinet for what I’d eat (since I was in outside sales I drove around a lot and this day I made a b-line to my parents house for food because, I didn’t keep food in my place: since I’d always eat it) a new thought came into my head, “what you do with food, isn’t normal and you need help”.

Prior to that day, my solution was always I need to lose weight, and I’d go on a diet, to fit into my jeans again. Then I’d lose some weight, and feel good for a short period of time, although still unhappy, and that was the worst part, here I was thinner and I was still unhappy! I thought the weight would fix things.

So the pattern returned, I’d go back to my old ways, because nothing had really changed except I was thinner. And I also had a double life going on, because no matter what I portrayed on the outside inside I was hiding, and no one  knew the truth of how I felt.

The day I made the call to get help was the day my life began to change. Finally it wasn’t just me, I’d someone to tell me what to do to get better. Up until then, it was always me trying to figure it out. And as Einstein said “the mind that created the problem can not fix the problem.” I began doing what I was told and one of the solutions to my eating problems involved me joining a group program.
